South Central Hilltop Making A Comeback Step By Step

When the Hilltop is in the news, it’s often about crime. But the south central Hilltop is making a comeback — step by step.

“One thing I think we can really do as a community is keep an eye out for each other and if we see something happening, call police. Call our neighbors. Let everyone know what’s happening rather than let suspicious activity go,” said Justin Boggs, who heads the local block watch with his mother, Lisa.

The block watch has been in place since 1997, and as a result, more people are taking care of their homes and each other.

There is pride for property and people. The Boggs target the area including South Ogden Avenue, Whitehead Road, and Mound Street.

“My neighbors are an extension of my family and my neighbors are my community, and I think we all need to come together and care for each other,” said Lisa Boggs.

The Sells family has lived in their south central Hilltop home for two years. Their kids look forward to National Night Out, what it stands for, and what it has to offer.

National Night Out gives kids and adults a chance to see that life has so much to offer.

“Everybody wants to say they brought their kids up in a decent neighborhood, and we are going to work so hard to get a decent neighborhood for these kids and for the older folks to retire here. We’re not going to stop,” Lisa Boggs said.

The 30^th Annual National Night Out is all about crime and drug prevention.

Columbus police officers will be participating in the event from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. around Columbus.

More than 150 community events are planned throughout Central Ohio, including live music, porch light vigils, cookouts and multiple kid-friendly activities.

National Night Out is designed to promote police-community partnerships; heighten crime, drug and violence awareness; generate support for anti-crime efforts; and build neighborhood unity by sending a message to criminals that neighborhoods are fighting back.
