A “Men In Black” & “Jump Street” Merger Film Is In The Works
The fallout over a security breach at Sony Pictures is still making headlines after business e-mail between the studio’s motion picture chief and president of production leaked online earlier this week. Now, after combing through the leaked information, The Wall Street Journal reports that e-mail to and from the studio’s co-chairman Amy Pascal reveal a possible franchise merger in the form of a Men in Black and Jump Street collaboration film.The possible merger would follow closely after this year’s successful 21 Jump Street sequel, 22 Jump Street which again featured Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum as undercover cops masquerading as students. While the internal e-mail breach doesn’t reveal much, it’s clear that neither Men in Black costar Will Smith or Tommy Lee Jones will feature heavily in the project and that former Jump Street directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller may be attached as both producers and directors.
The Wall Street Journal shared a response from Jonah Hill to a studio head: “jump street merging with mib i think that’s clean and rad and powerful.”
A separate email from a president of production at Columbia Pictures, which is owned by Sony, explains that the project was set to be greenlit even without a script. “We don’t have a script yet so we’ll be greenlighting the movie off the concept and the talent involved,” Hanna Minghella wrote.
The news comes on the heels of 22 Jump Street earning more than $330 million at the box office earlier this year and would serve as a sort of reboot for Men in Black’s commercially disappointing 2012 outing, Men In Black 3.
In yet another piece of correspondence leaked due to the embarrassing security breach at Sony, a president at the company pitched the project to original Men In Black producer Steven Spielberg via a letter to his lawyer.
“We didn’t do as well as we had hoped for on the last MIB film, but that hasn’t caused us to lose faith in the franchise,” Andrew Gumpert wrote. “In reality, the exact opposite has occurred where we all have an opportunity to take an interim step on the way to hopefully forging ahead again in the pure-play MIB universe.”
