$7 Million Settlement in Casey Goodson Jr. Lawsuit, Approved

On Tuesday July 30th, Franklin County commissioners approved a $7 million settlement in the civil lawsuit over the death of Casey Goodson Jr. The settlement comes almost four years after Goodson was murdered by ex-deputy Jason Meade in 2020.
Goodson’s estate sued the county and Meade— accusing them of excessive force, wrongful death, and misconduct by law enforcement.
As part of the settlement, the plaintiffs will dismiss all claims. Additionally— the county, sheriff’s office, and Meade will not admit any liability. The breakdown of the settlement includes:
– $4,285,000 to Walton + Brown LLP
– $1,315,000 to Pacific Life and Annuity Services, Inc.
– $1,300,000 to New York Life Insurance Company
– $100,000 to United of Omaha Life Insurance Company

Walton + Brown LLP, representing Goodson’s estate, shared a statement on the significance of the settlement.
This settlement marks a significant step in the pursuit of justice for Casey and his loved ones. Since that fateful day, Casey’s family has endured immense pain and hardship, navigating a long and challenging journey toward justice.
The case stems from a December 4, 2020 incident where Meade, after an assignment with the U.S. Marshals Service, claimed to see Goodson waving a gun while driving. Meade pursued Goodson to his grandmother’s house in North Columbus and alleged that Goodson pointed a gun at him while standing in the doorway. This prompted Meade to shoot.
Goodson, who had a permit to carry, was shot six times.
Meade is facing a separate criminal trial with two remaining counts of murder and one count of reckless homicide. His first trial ended in a deadlock, and the second trial is scheduled for November 4.
